UM Halal Center
On February 8, 2019, the Universitas Negeri Malang (UM) inaugurated the Halal Center at Sasana Budaya UM. The event was attended by Prof. Dr. AH. Rofi’uddin (UM Rector), Prof. Ir. Sukoso, M. Sc., Ph.D. (Head of the Halal Product Guarantee Agency (BPJPH) of the Ministry of Religious Affairs, the Republic of Indonesia), Prof. Dr. Heri Praktikto, M. Si. (Head of Halal Center), Drs. H. Sutiaji (Mayor of Malang city), hundreds of UM academics and invited guests from various agencies and institutions.
"UM Halal Center is formed by Government Institutions, Islamic Foundations, State Universities (PTN), and Private Universities (PTS). The Halal center has tasks to assist, foster, supervise the guarantee of halal products, entering halal provider data to BPJPH and managing data banks. Funding will be obtained from various sources including companies and independent businesses. All of these need to be arranged systematically and structurally in order to be able to control the flow of funds in making halal products to be distributed in local and foreign areas", said Prof. Ir. Sukoso, M. Sc., Ph.D.
The government support is needed to improve food quality and to attract buyers. Therefore, all parties involved must be able to work together to create a good environment for halal food and beverages consumers.
"For 2017 and 2018, in Indonesia, Malang city is the number 2 of religious tourism destination after Lombok. Various related parties need to work together to improve the quality of halal food production", said Drs. H. Sutiaji.
